The Problem: The Escalating Threat of Wildfires
Between 2020 and 2025, wildfires have caused significant damage to infrastructure in the United States. In 2020, wildfires across Washington, Oregon, and California burned nearly 3.5 million acres, damaging electrical lines, pipelines, and roads.
In August 2023, a wildfire in Maui, Hawai'i, impacted over 2,000 structures, marking it as the deadliest U.S. wildfire in at least the past century.
More recently, in January 2025, the Palisades and Eaton fires in Los Angeles resulted in significant property and infrastructure damage, displacing thousands of residents and tragically claiming lives.
Wildfires impose a substantial economic burden, with estimated annual costs ranging between $394 billion and $893 billion, accounting for 2–4% of the U.S. GDP. In 2023 alone, wildfires destroyed 4,318 structures, including 3,060 homes, highlighting the extensive damage to residential areas.
